Two teens who allegedly went to the home of their victim to demand drugs, and then smashed a front window with a hammer when things didn’t go their way, will have to come back to court at the end of the month so the state can clarify how it wishes to prosecute the younger of the pair.
The younger defendant who cannot be named as the offence occurred when he was 17 was originally remanded on continuing bail until 18 December, after he was called first.
He is charged with blackmail, extortion, criminal damage, production of an implement – the hammer – at a Prosperous property on 21 May, 2023.
He is also charged with possession with intent to supply an unspecified amount to cannabis at a home in Naas just two days later.
Next called was his older co-defendant Tadhg Sherlock from Ellsmore Close, Jigginstown, Naas who appeared in court on his 20th birthday to face the three charges stemming from the night at the Prosperous address only.
“He went to the home of the injured party with a co-accused, and approached the injured party for drugs,” explained Sergeant Mary Meade.
“He said he would smash up the house, and when he was told he wouldn’t get anything, the co-defendant gives the defendant a hammer and he smashed the front window,” said the sergeant.
“Those are serious allegations. The terror inflicted!” noted Judge John Brennan.
“He was 20 days beyond his 18th birthday,” the sergeant informed the court.
“I’ll refuse jurisdiction,” said the judge.
Noting the younger defendant was juvenile when the offences were committed, the judge remanded him on continuing bail until 28 May “for further directions (from the DPP)".
