Man drove wrong way down Kildare motorway, court hears

The court was told the defendant was observed travelling the wrong way down the M9

A MAN accused of driving the wrong way up the motorway had a bench warrant issued against him after he failed to show in court recently.

Radzh Ishchenko (48) with an address in Stonewell Park, Lucan was due to appear in Naas District Court to face a charge of dangerous driving  after he was seen at J2 on the M9 near Kilcullen.

Judge Desmond Zaidan enquired as to why this was a Section 53 charge.

“He was going the wrong way on the motorway,” said Sergeant Dave Hanrahan.

“Fortunately, it was 1.30am in the morning so there was no crash,” added the sergeant.

“He said he was following Google maps,” he said, consulting Mr Ischenko’s charge sheet from the enormous pile of documents on the desk in front of him.

“He is originally from Ukrainian, but there were no crashes,” he reiterated.

The judge then allowed court garda Paul Connolly to call the defendant a second time from the Atrium, but when Garda Connolly returned to the court room and shook his head at the judge, he was left with no option but to issue an arrest for Mr Ishchenko’s arrest.
