Maynooth University (MU) welcomed alumni, former players, students, staff and members of the wider GAA community to the Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth on October 23 for a Golden Jubilee celebration marking 50 years since the University's 1976 Sigerson Cup victory.
The event celebrated the sporting heritage of Sigerson GAA at Maynooth and recognised the lasting friendships, achievements and sense of community fostered through Gaelic games over the past five decades.
Hosted by RTÉ broadcaster Damian Lawlor, the evening brought together generations of the Maynooth GAA community to reflect on the club's history and its contribution to university life.
A highlight of the celebration was a fireside discussion featuring four distinguished alumni and GAA figures representing Ireland's four provinces: Marc O'Sé, Glenn Ryan, Paddy Carr and Fr Dan O'Mahony, captain of the 1976 Sigerson Cup-winning team.
Fr Dan O’Mahony, captain of the 1976 Sigerson Cup-winning team and former Mayo GAA player, said: "Winning the Sigerson Cup in 1976 is a memory that has stayed with all of us, but what has endured even longer are the friendships and bonds formed during our time in Maynooth.
To have been selected as captain of the 1976 team was a privilege and an honour that I will treasure for the rest of my life. It was a special group of players who came together from different parts of the country with a shared commitment to representing the University.
To see so many former teammates, friends and members of the wider GAA community gathered here 50 years later, including almost the entire panel and management team, is a wonderful reminder of what that achievement meant, and still means, to all of us. We also remembered those who are no longer with us.
We hope our success in 1976 will inspire present and future Maynooth players to pursue another Sigerson Cup title. On behalf of the 1976 team, I would like to thank everyone involved in organising such a wonderful reunion and celebration."

Speaking at the event, Jenny Duffy, GAA Development Officer at Maynooth University, said: “Half a century of participation in Sigerson competition has given generations of Maynooth students lifelong friendships, formative experiences and a family away from home.
This anniversary is a chance to celebrate that legacy, and we are delighted to welcome the Sigerson family back to Maynooth to share their stories together.” The programme also included special recognition of the 1976 team, contributions from guest speakers across the university and GAA communities, and reflections on more than 50 years of football at Maynooth.
The event provided an opportunity for alumni, past players and current students to reconnect, celebrate shared experiences and honour the legacy of Sigerson GAA at Maynooth University.
