A WOMAN who will be 90 in less than a year will have to return to court in a fortnight to hear how her case of dangerous driving is progressing.

This week (25 March), Athy District Court was introduced to the 89-year-old who is being charged with dangerous driving at Clonpierce, Ballylinan on 7 October.

“Judge, she came around a corner on the wrong side of the road. A third party was stopped and she hit her,” said Sergeant Dave Hanrahan. “Injuries?” enquired Judge Desmond Zaidan. “She was more hurt herself than the other person. She fractured an ankle and a jaw,” said the sergeant. Noting the defendant straining to lean in towards the bench, Judge Zaidan asked: “Can she hear what I’m saying?” “I’m not sure” said an accompanying relative, “but she has hearing aids in”.

“Next time you come in, remind me there are issues with her hearing,” said the judge kindly. “Remind me, because I’ll forget!” he smiled. “He then remanded the woman on continuing bail to reappear on 8 April.
