A councillor spoke of the anger and hurt caused to a family who discovered items stolen from a loved one’s grave.

Cllr Paul Doogue raised that issue of anti-social behaviour and thefts from St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow and the hurt it causes families. He said he had been approached recently by a woman who was very angry that “every single light she had on the grave had been taken off and stolen”. He called for greater security and CCTV at the cemetery.

Council CEO Coilín O’Reilly said the issue of anti-social behaviour at the cemetery had “come up regularly” before the summer and there had been numerous engagements between the local authority and An Garda Síochána on the issue.

“If people have an issue or a complaint to make, please go to An Garda Síochána or ourselves, so that it can be formally recorded,” said Mr O’Reilly.
