KILDARE County Council has confirmed that progress is continuing on the long-awaited redevelopment of the housing units at Canal Side in Athy, with a final agreed approach expected by early 2026.

Responding to a query from cllr Aoife Breslin, the council said a full feasibility study has now been completed and submitted to the planning department.

The study examined whether the existing buildings can be adapted for use as social housing or whether replacing them with contemporary units would be more viable.

The Canal Side site presents several complexities. It sits within an architectural conservation area and a designated natural heritage area, and carries a protected view. It also lies adjacent to major upcoming amenities, including the Greenway and the Barrow Blueway Scheme.

A series of technical surveys, including structural, asbestos and topographical assessments, have already been carried out to inform the decision-making process. According to the acting senior executive architect with the housing capital team, discussions with the planning department are ongoing as both sides work toward an agreed strategy.

The council anticipates that the preferred approach for the site will be finalised in early 2026, paving the way for the next stage of the project.
