CHURCHTOWN NS just outside of Athy celebrated 6th class graduation and the retirement of teacher Valerie Rice last week.

“We wish our wonderful 6th Class students the very best as they continue on their educational journey, on what is always a special and emotional day for the children, parents and staff,” said Principal Gayle Murphy.
“We also celebrated Mrs Valerie Rice’s retirement after many years in Churchtown N.S.

“Valerie began her teaching career in several schools, including Swan National School, before joining Churchtown NS in 2000.
“Since then, she has made a lasting impact on the lives of countless children and families. For many years, she taught in the infant classroom, warmly welcoming young children as they took their first steps into school life.
“Churchtown also holds a special place in Valerie’s heart, as her son Edmund was a pupil here too.

“Throughout her career, Valerie generously shared her time, energy and expertise. She led and supported many initiatives, including Science Blast and Cycle Right, but her most enduring legacy is her work with the Green Schools Programme.
“Through her dedication and leadership, Churchtown NS achieved all five Green Flags, most recently the Biodiversity Flag in 2024.

“Valerie inspired pupils to care for the environment through projects such as WOW Days, tree planting, growing vegetables and protecting biodiversity.

“She also encouraged children to become active environmental leaders through the Green School Committees. We thank Valerie for her outstanding commitment, dedication and care over the past 26 years and wish her every happiness and good health as she begins this well-earned new chapter."
