Busy Naas road in line to get new pedestrian crossing

There is money in the pot but perhaps not as much as some people would like

Poplar Square, one of the possible sites for a new pedestrian crossing in Naas

An ambitious request to add three new pedestrian crossings to the Dublin Road in Naas was not completely dismissed, despite it being pointed out that the council only has enough money for one.

The joint motion was a cross-party collaboration with cllrs Evie Sammon and Fintan Brett of Fine Gael joining with cllr Carmel Kelly of Fianna Fail, and cllr Ger Dunne from Independent Ireland at the recent meeting of the Municipal District.

“We’re seeking that Kildare County Council installs three crossings on the Dublin Road - one located at Meadows and Byrne, one located at Roseville Estate, and an integrated crossing from Barker and Jones to PTSB in Poplar Square,” read the motion.

However, the senior engineer at Traffic Management Darragh Hodgins was the staffer who brought the disappointing realism.

“The elected members have allocated €50,000 (from LPT) in 2025 for the provision of a new signalised pedestrian crossing, and ancillary works in this municipal district” he began.

“The traffic management section can progress the design of one new signalised crossing, and other crossings can be provided subject to funding being available."

However, he cautioned about any works at Poplar Square.

“It should be noted that any intervention at the Poplar Square junction has significant complications due to the presence of underground culverts close to the surface of the carriageway."
