Call for Athy green area to be turned into parking
Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme
KILDARE County Council will look at turning green space in an Athy housing estate into parking spaces.
Newly appointed cathaoirleach Mark Leigh brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District proposing that the council ‘looks at unused green areas in Clonmullion Estate, Athy to provide extra parking spaces’.
Municipal District engineer Kevin Dunne said that he would investigate the matter, but that funding and a design would be needed for the project to progress.
Cllr Leigh told the meeting that there is not enough parking currently to meet residents’ needs, before adding that he does not want “valuable” green space to be gotten rid of.
Cllr Leigh’s Labour Party colleague, cllr Aoife Breslin, suggested that this may be a wider issue going forward, with an increase in cars in residential areas but less space available for parking.
Cllr Veralouise Behan supported the motion, commenting that additional parking spaces for residents has made a significant difference in Levitstown.
