Call for Kildare bus service to be extended to Sundays
The local link service has been described as "highly successful"
Local councillors are attempting to secure a Sunday service for a south Kildare bus route.
Cllr Aoife Breslin tabled a motion at the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District calling on the council to request that the National Transport Authority (NTA) provide a Sunday service on the 883 Athy-to-Newbridge bus route. The route serves Athy, Kilberry, Kildangan, Nurney and Kildare Town.
Senior engineer Chris Galvin issued the council’s response, which stated that a letter would be sent to the NTA with the request if the motion was passed.
Cllrs Ivan Keatley, Mark Leigh and Brian Dooley all expressed support for the motion. Cllr Breslin described the service as “highly successful” but noted that those who rely on the route are left without access to public transport on Sundays.
Cllr Keatley requested that Kildoon (also known by its Irish name, Coill Duáin), a townland near the village of Nurney, be added to the route.
This was agreed to, with the council stating that the letter to the NTA would include both the request for a Sunday service and a proposal to extend the route to serve Kildoon.
