Council responds to illegal dumping in Athy
Dumping in Athy
KILDARE County Council has said it is aware of ongoing illegal dumping at a lane behind Hyland's Butchers in Athy, following complaints that the area had become blighted by rubbish.
In a statement issued this week, the council confirmed the site is in private ownership and said that owners or occupiers are legally required to keep their land free of litter.
Kildare County Council said: “Kildare County Council does not condone illegal dumping and appropriate measures are being examined to deal with the issue.”
The response comes after representatives of Athy Tidy Towns said the lane had become “a wreck” in recent months due to repeated dumping of household waste and uncertainty over land ownership.
The area has been taken over by a mammoth pile of rubbish made up of dozens of bin bags. It has been reported that the current pile of rubbish has been there for over a month.
Chairperson of Athy Tidy Towns, Ger Kelly, who raised the issue with council officials, recently said he is “well aware” of the dumping situation, and that it is “getting worse every day.”
