Second half goals by Colm Dalton and Daragh Mangan helped Sallins to a very comfortable win over Ballyteague at Cedral St Conleths Park on Thursday evening.
Favourites in many people’s eyes for this year's Intermediate Championship, Sallins played like a team who got something of a flea in their ear during the half time break from manager Jonathan Daniels.
They started well with three points, that each could have been a goal, inside the opening ten minutes while Stephen Kelly also brought a smart save from Jason Carey in the Ballyteague goal.
Although they led by 0-8 to 0-3 by the half time break, there was a feeling that they still had a number of gears to move into as they laboured somewhat in the final minutes leading into the half time whistle.
TBut they showed that through the third quarter why they are so highly rated. County man Colm Dalton scored their first goal after 35 minutes after linking up well with Luke Killian.
Dalton’s brother James, who finished the game with seven points from play, then made the final pass from a flowing move to leave big midfielder Daragh Mangan with an easy palm into the empty net for their second goal after 42 minutes.
The only major black mark for Sallins on the night was a red card for Cian Grimes in the 54th minute for an off the ball incident, although at least one Ballyteague player seemed fortunate in not joining him in the walk to the sideline.
Ballyteague finished the game with 13 players after late black cards shown to Conor Hanley and Ryan Webb for cynical tackles as Sallins looked to end the game with a third goal.
In all, the second half showed why Sallins are so well thought of and although they have tougher challenges to come the pace, movement and finishing in their forward line will make them a difficult prospect for anybody.
