Don’t flip out, but pancake prices are on the rise
Ottoline Spearman
The cost of making pancakes has risen by 35.2 per cent, according to data from the CSO.
Comparing the cost of ingredients of a pancake mix of eggs, milk, and flour, the cost of two litres of full-fat milk has risen the most in the past five years, at 42.6 per cent.
The CSO compared the prices between December 2020 and December 2025, and found that two kilograms of flour rose by 31.6 per cent, while a carton of six eggs rose by 32 per cent.
If you're used to sprinkling a dash of sugar and a squeeze of lemon on your pancakes, then you'll be spending more than twice as much as you did before, as the cost of a one-kilogram bag of sugar has risen hugely by 60.5 per cent.
However, year-on-year from December 2024, the price of sugar has remained the same, while the price of flour has fallen marginally at 0.8 per cent. Milk has risen by 2.1 per cent, while eggs have gone up by 4.9 per cent.
