Drivers hit by sharp fuel price hikes while electric vehicle charging stays steady

Petrol and diesel prices notably increased during March, with diesel experiencing the largest jump, according to an AA Ireland report.

However, both home and pay as you go public electric vehicle charging costs remained unchanged from last month.

On average, from February to March, diesel prices rose to €1.90 per litre, up 18 cents from €1.72 in February.

For petrol, prices increased to €1.81 per litre, up eight cents from €1.73 in February, according to AA's fuel price survey.

AA Ireland noted that pump prices remain closely linked to fluctuations in global oil markets, geopolitical events such as the recent Middle East conflict, and currency exchange rates.

As a result, prices can change quickly and vary significantly by location and fuel retailer.

An AA Ireland spokesperson said that the increase in fuel prices makes it more important than ever for motorists to shop around where possible.

“We’ve heard from our members that prices at the pumps are moving above and below €2.00 per litre on a daily basis. Even a difference of a few cents per litre can add up over time.”

Drivers can also help reduce fuel consumption and running costs by adopting more fuel-efficient driving habits like:

• Driving smoothly and avoiding harsh acceleration or braking.
• Maintaining a steady speed where possible.
• Removing unnecessary weight from the vehicle.
• Avoiding excessive idling.
• Planning journeys to reduce unnecessary mileage.

Regular vehicle maintenance is also important; it not only improves safety but can also reduce fuel consumption.

“Simple checks such as maintaining the correct tyre pressure, ensuring the engine is properly serviced and replacing worn air filters can all help improve fuel efficiency,” the AA spokesperson said.

“Keeping tyres properly inflated and ensuring the vehicle is running efficiently can make a noticeable difference to fuel usage over time.”

Regular servicing can also help prevent unexpected breakdowns, which are often caused by battery issues, tyre problems, and general wear and tear.
