A KILDARE family has spoken out following a serious road traffic accident on the Sallins Bypass yesterday evening.

The crash occurred as the family – a mother, father, and their five-year-old son – were travelling to Newbridge to celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary.

According to the mother's statement shared online on the Kildare Weather Facebook page, their plans were shattered when a car driven by an allegedly intoxicated driver veered into the opposite side of the road.

“My husband hit the brakes and tried as much as possible for us not to be hit full frontal,” she said.

Despite the severity of the collision, the family survived — though not without injury.

Their young son stayed overnight for observation at Crumlin Children's Hospital.

“No serious injury other than being in complete shock and badly bruised from the seatbelt,” his mother noted. The boy’s father is also recovering from minor injuries, protected by his seatbelt and the car’s airbag.

The woman remains on a trolley at Tallaght Hospital and is expected to be transferred to St James’s Hospital for consultation with a plastic surgeon. She sustained a deep cut to her right hand, which may require surgery due to suspected muscle damage. She also reported extensive bruising and general pain.

“The car is a write-off,” she said, but added, “I am grateful for us all to still be alive and can't wait to hug my son and husband hopefully tomorrow.”

In a pointed message to the driver of the other vehicle who allegedly fled the scene she wrote:

“I hope they caught the guy who decided to walk off instead of directly facing the consequences for driving under the influence. I hope you get the help you need to sort your life out, but also will be held accountable for the pain and trauma you have caused us on a day that was supposed to be a celebration.”

She ended her message with heartfelt thanks to the community: “Thanks again for all the help of everyone that came to our rescue. This is why I love Ireland!”

Community Facebook page, Kildare Weather, has created a GoFundMe for the family for their trouble, which has already surpassed the target amount of €500.
