As we approach the witching season the council has reminded the citizens of Kildare that bonfires are illegal, and it will be taking action.
“Fines will be imposed on those found responsible for providing, or stockpiling rubbish for bonfires,” warned Rachel Jackson from the environment section.
She was replying to a question from cllr Ann Breen at the recent Naas Municipal District meeting when she asked: “What plans the council has to pre-empt and minimise the potential danger presented by upcoming Halloween public bonfires?”
“The council, with support from an Garda Siochána, local business and community groups, are calling communities not to contribute to any bonfires, and to respect both the environment and the health of their families and neighbours,” said Ms Jackson.
“Householders will be reminded of the risks from bonfires, their illegal nature, and the negative effect on the general environment. Every individual has a responsibility to dispose of his or her waste correctly, and legally. It is illegal to dump or burn waste of any description, including for a bonfire, and it is illegal to allow unauthorised waste collectors to collect and dispose of waste.
“Bonfires cause dangerous pollution, and can contaminate the land around the fire and any area the smoke passes."
