The Copart building in Castledermot

A FIRE broke out in auto auction business Copart in Castledermot resulting in fire units from four stations attending over the bank holiday weekend.

The call was received by the fire brigade’s control centre at on Saturday 1 February at 12.48pm who alerted fire stations in Carlow Town and Athy soon afterwards, and both attended the scene.

Crews from Dunlavin and Baltinglass were also alerted and attended the scene with four fire ambulances, a hydraulic platform and two water tankers to put out the fire.

The fire spread as a result of a fire damaged vehicle on the premises.

Luckily, it was put out after two hours with no casualties or structural damage to the building, besides smoke damage.

Manager of Copart, Eugene Horan, called the fire service “fantastic” for their efforts in responding to the incident and said: “We were very lucky. Thank you to the fire service for their speedy reactions to our call. As a multi-national company, we have never seen such professionalism.” Copart also credited the work of Carlow company Woods Contract Cleaners and Property Maintenance for their work in cleaning up the place, allowing Copart to open with business as usual after the bank holiday Monday.
