GARDAÍ have seized four illegal e-scooters during a roads policing operation in Naas, Co Kildare.

The seizures were carried out by the Naas Roads Policing Unit. Gardaí said the e-scooters were not compliant with current road traffic legislation and posed road safety risks.

Kildare Gardaí explained that under Irish law, e-scooters used on public roads must meet strict criteria. They must have a maximum speed of 20km/h and a maximum motor power of 400 watts. E-scooters must not have seats or unauthorised modifications, and only one rider is permitted. Riders must be aged 16 or over, and all standard road traffic laws apply.

Gardaí warned that any e-scooters exceeding these limits are considered illegal and may be seized.

A spokesperson said enforcement action will continue nationwide, with penalties including seizure of illegal scooters, fines and potential prosecution for non-compliant use.

“No compliance. No excuses,” said a Garda spokesperson. “Road safety saves lives.”
