Frustration over second Liffey bridge in Newbridge

The bridge in Newbridge
Concern has been expressed by Newbridge locals over delays in the construction and opening of the much-anticipated second Liffey bridge in Newbridge.
During last week’s Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, cllr Heavy announced a motion requesting comprehensive updates on all outstanding issues related to the project. The proposed bridge is a critical component of the Newbridge Southern Orbital Ring Road, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity in the region.
Local residents will be eagerly awaiting further updates as the project progresses, as cllr Heavy stated: “It’s been well over two years since planning began for the relief road and bridge. The people of Newbridge are crying out for this.” The motion specifically sought details on the proposed timeline for the submission of a business plan, securing funding, tendering and other key steps necessary to advance the project.
In response, the council confirmed that progress was underway, with a consultant appointed to prepare a preliminary business case for the remaining section of the ring road, including the second bridge. This document will be reviewed internally before being submitted to the Department of Transport as part of a funding application for the project.
While this marks a step forward, the council acknowledged that several subsequent tasks must be completed before construction can start. However, a definitive timeline for these tasks remains unavailable at this stage.
“Kildare County Council will continue to keep elected members updated as additional information becomes available,” the report stated.
