The particular problem is on the L2019 Arthurstown to Beggars End Crossroads

A CAMPAIGN to address a notorious stretch of road is building speed after a local minister added his support.

Cllr Carmel Kelly had raised the  issue with the council last month who confirmed there were aware of speeding on the stretch of road and that it was beginning to take measures.

Persistent speeding

The Fianna Fáil councillor has also called in Minister James Lawless to lend his weight to this issue that has been a thorn in her professional side for some time.

The pair say they are working with local gardaí and Kildare County Council to try a resolve a dangerous problem of persistent driver speeding on the L2019 at Rathgorragh which is located about two kilometers south of Kill, and about five kilometres north-east of Beggar’s End.

“I have raised this problem with the council along with councillor Kelly who has raised this issue on several occasions at council meetings,” said the Minister.

Traffic survey

“Cllr Kelly has now secured funding to improve traffic calming measures on this section of road which is positive news and very much needed to tackle speeding in the area.

“The particular problem is on the L2019 Arthurstown to Beggars End Crossroads (five kilometers of straight road).

"We are also working with the Naas Roads Policing unit who again confirmed with us that they are stepping up patrols in the area following on from recent speed checks on the road which led to a number of fixed penalty notices being issued in the area."

Cllr Kelly said: “Now that the Council has committed to doing a traffic survey, what I’ve done is put in €5,000 of LPT money to fund extra signage, but we won’t know until he comes back (to councillors) with a development."

Speed vans

“I don’t know when results will come in,” she said honestly.

“They are so understaffed in the Roads Section right now, and this is their busiest time of the year, so I’ve no idea when it (the traffic survey) will be completed.

“So to save a couple of months of them coming back to say there is no money available, I’ve thrown in my €5k to help expedite the process.

“There are a couple of kilometres on that road without signs, and the Guards have confirmed to me that there are Gatso vans on this stretch, and have issued tickets.

“I’m not the expert, I’m just making sure the capable hands have the starter funds."
