Growing population leading to parking shortfall in one Kildare town

It was reported that this was having a knock on impact on local shops

A LONG-awaited town centre car-parking strategy for Kilcullen has been called for.

In a motion before the recent meeting of Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, cllr Tracey O’Dwyer asked that officials outline the steps taken to commence the plan, noting that while the originally referenced 12-month timeframe was not a strict deadline, it had been identified as a high-priority short-term action to protect the primacy of the town centre.

Cllr O’Dwyer explained the negative impact the lack of parking has had on the town and businesses.

With the influx of residential units above shops in the town centre, public parking has been taken up by residents, leaving less parking for those visiting or wishing to use the town’s facilities. This has had a negative effect on the local independent bookshop, Woodbine, which is “struggling” as a result of the parking problem.

Cllr Chris Pender supported the motion, and added: “Parking in Kilcullen has come up in so many ways. It’s about time it progresses.”

Cllr O’Dwyer brought attention to the Kilcullen Town Centre Plan, which details public realm improvements in the town, and suggested the council “apply a bit of pressure” to it, to ensure it is a “living document”.

In response, the council’s transport department said it is currently finalising draft parking bye-laws for Kildare town and preparing plans for Athy.

Bye-laws for Kilcullen remain under consideration, with elected members to be advised of a potential timeline once it becomes available.

In the meantime, the council said the area’s parking warden will continue to monitor compliance with road traffic regulations.
