Kerdiffstown official opening tomorrow

Kerdiffstown Park, which formally opens tomorrow (31 January)
THE €30m environmental rescue package that is Kerdiffstown Park is to be formally opened tomorrow morning (31 January) at 10.30am by the Cathaoirleach of County Kildare Kevin Duffy.
The Council will welcome Secretary General of the Department of Climate, Environment and Energy, Oonagh Buckley, as well as our own brand new Ministers of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, and of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and the Marine, Martin Heydon.
This project remediated the former Kerdiffstown Landfill into a 31Ha (80ac) multi-use public park.
By using the latest land management practices and sustainable construction techniques, these works transformed – over the last 15 years - the former landfill site north of Naas into a fantastic public amenity to be used and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, for generations to come.
Kerdiffstown Park boasts an array of amenities, including two full-size all-weather sports pitches, three five-a-side pitches, several paths and walking trails, ecological areas, vast open green space, a playground, visitor car parks and age-friendly seating.
This is all the more remarkable, and quite the triumph for the county, as Kerdiffstown landfill “was as close to an environmental disaster as you can get” in 2011 when an underground fire at the site almost closed the adjacent M7.
It took 27 days to control and required the importation of a device from the Netherlands to inject liquid nitrogen into the conflagration.
