Kildare people on their way to work this morning were stuck in traffic due to a protest which blocked the M7 towards Dublin.
The protest, which was against the Government’s purchase of the Citywest hotel in Dublin for IPAS accommodation, started at 7.30am and cleared at approximately 9.50am, leaving motorists late for work and other various appointments.
It was decided by Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan TD, that the Citywest Hotel would be great value for money as an IPAS centre, rather than being leased out.
He also noted that he wished to reform Ireland’s international protection system to ensure its efficiency.
Residents from surrounding areas, such as Saggart, worry about the burden that could be put on public services if this goes ahead.
This lead to a series of protests against the taking over of the hotel, which disrupted commuters on their way to work this morning.
People from areas in Kildare took to social media this morning upset that the protest was impacting people getting to work and appointments – with one man from Athy writing that he left at 7.15am and will arrive to work at around 10am.
