Kildare gardaí out in force over bank holiday

AS part of the August Bank Holiday road safety campaign put in place by Kildare Gardaí, the Naas Roads Policing Unit (RPU) clocked six vehicles doing more than 30kph over the 80kph limit at Old Connell in Newbridge, with one vehicle detected at 115kph.
“Remember when we said ‘slow down, and arrive alive?” said a post on the an Garda Siochana Kildare Facebook poage.
“Well, not everyone was listening.
“Every driver received a Fixed Charge Notice of €160 and three penalty points.
“If you're in such a hurry that €160 and three penalty points seem like a good investment, we can't help you.
“Speed doesn't save time, it destroys lives, so slow down. Your destination will still be there,” the spokesperson warned.
The most serious incident over the weekend on Saturday (1 August) just outside Straffan when the RPU attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic collision in which the vehicle ended up on its roof.
This driver escaped without injury, however, the he failed a roadside drugs test for cannabis and cocaine and was arrested.
The driver has since been charged with dangerous driving, and further charges may follow pending the results of forensic drug analysis.
“This time, luck was on the driver's side, but next time, it could be someone else's life that pays the price,” said gardaí on Facebook.
From Kildare town yesterday (3 August) Sergeant Dave Maher reported a quiet weekend “it was nice and quiet for the weekend. I’m blessing myself for that,” he laughed.
“Things are relatively good at the minute”.
