Tennyson lords it for Scoil Mhuire
Logan Tennyson scored 1-3 as Scoil Mhuire Clane made a winning start to the Bro Bosco Cup
LoganTennyson lit up the Kildare GAA world during the summer with his exploits for the minor footballers, particularly in that famous extra time Leinster Final, and the young St Kevin’s player was still a shining light for his school, Scoil Mhuire, Clane, in their three point victory over Moate CS in Conneff Park, Clane on Tuesday afternoon. The almighty shower of rain just before throw in made conditions slippery on a breezy day and it was the Clane school who enjoyed the advantage of the elements in the first half.
Still, it took a somewhat nervy Scoil Mhuire side, without the services of two further Kildare minors, Charlie Doran, injured and Eoghan Lyons, suspended, over twelve minutes to register their first score. Step forward Tennyson to send over a two-pointer free and a minute later, after a Clane turnover in midfield, he combined with corner forward, Callum Fogarty to fire his side into the lead for the first time with a great goal.
Tennyson wasn’t finished yet as he provided an assist in the 21st minute when his long range free dropped short and corner forward, Callum Dunne, reacted quickest to fire over.
Despite playing against the breeze and the threat of Tennyson, it was Moate CS who led at half time. Impressive full forward, Darragh Deegan, sent over two early points, one from a free and one from play, and he was on hand again to claim his third point in the seventeenth minute. Apart from Dunne’s free, despite playing against the breeze, Moate outscored Clane 0-4 to 0-1 for the remainder of the first half. Deegan got his fourth point in the 23rd minute and the Westmeath school drew level with a long-range point from Harry Hughes a minute before half time and took a one-point lead in at the break, 0-7 to 1-3, thanks to an Alex Mullen Adamson free.
Aodan Maddock levelled the game for the third time with a fine point a minute after the restart and although now playing against a stiffening breeze, Clane curtailed the Moate scoring to just a Sean Mackey point in the 38th minute.
The game turned Clane’s way in the space of three minutes just before the end of the third quarter. Tennyson’s free fell short in the wind and Dunne reacted quickest again to level the game in the 41st minute and three minutes later a long range free from county minor, Jack Doran, was expertly finished to the net with an overhead flick by Ryan Bagnall and Scoil Mhuire led by three for the first time in the game. Moate reduced the deficit to one with a two-pointer free from Luke Tooher but the Westmeath school were guilty of some wayward shooting and were punished when Clane centre half forward, Aidan Tobin raced through for a goal seven minutes from time.
The game was back to two points as we approached injury time thanks to a superb two pointer for Moate from Evan Daly but Tennyson scored the insurance point from an impossible angle, deep in injury time, to see Clane through by three points to leave them in a strong position ahead of their next game, away to Knockbeg College.
