Gardaí in Kildare seized several improvised explosive devices and arrested five people on Monday as part of an investigation into organised criminal activity.
Detective gardaí attached to Leixlip Garda Station intercepted a car in the Carbury area of County Kildare at around 11.30am on Monday.
Following a search of the vehicle, a total of 19 petrol bombs were recovered. Four adult males were subsequently arrested and are currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in the county.
Separately, while dealing with the incident, gardaí were confronted by a male in his late 40s who was armed with a knife. He was arrested, has since been charged, and appeared before a sitting of Naas District Court this morning (Tuesday).
Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will follow, say gardaí.
