“TO BE fair, Valentine’s Day is only around the corner!” said a judge to a man accused, though denying assaulting his ex-partner in front of their child.
Appearing at Naas District Court last week (5 February) by videolink from prison where he is serving a separate sentence was Kenneth Wilson (56), of Carna, Suncroft charged with assault causing harm on 15 January at Commons North, Carna, Suncroft for an alleged assault on his ex-partner.
“That’s not the truth, no blackguardin’, I showed my hands to the guards and there wasn’t a mark on them,” said Mr Wilson when first given the opportunity to defend himself against the allegation.
Sergeant Mary Meade for the State alleged Wilson had “punched her twice in the face, and attempted to strangulate her in front of their child while trying to push her into a ditch”.
“That’s not true!” shouted Mr Wilson from the screen. “You’ll get your turn,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan, but Mr Wilson continued. “I love all my children, and would never do this."
“She got into a rage after drinking vodka, made all these assertions, but you saw the pictures (shown in evidence at his initial hearing in January) and there wasn’t a mark on her”.
Defending barrister Donncha Craddock attempted to have the case now marked “pre-emptory”, after the judge adjourned the case to 19 February, but the judge ruled against that saying: “This is only his third time up”.
