A man found drunk outside a pub in the middle of the afternoon was sentenced to two months in jail after the judge learned he had 31 previous convictions for public order offences.
Daniel O’Brien (26), with an address in a caravan in Abbey Car Park, Clane Road, Celbridge was appearing in Naas District Court this week (3 July) from custody where he had been held since his arrest six days previously.
“He was drunk and a danger to himself outside a pub in Rathcoffey at 5pm,” explained Sergeant Dave Hanrahan.
“I apologise for that,” said Mr O’Brien.
As he had pleaded guilty to being drunk in public and using threatening and abusive behaviour, the sergeant revealed that he had a total of 64 previous convictions, with almost half of these public order offences.
“You will be aware Daniel’s uncle died recently, and people who shouldn’t were drinking,” explained his solicitor David Powderly.
Wasting no more time, Judge Desmond Zaidan sentenced Mr O’Brien to two months in prison, but backdated the start of the sentence to his day of arrest and incarceration.
“I’ve done my best for you, but you got to get a grip on yourself,” the judge advised.
“You’ve spent two or three days in prison, and you already look the better for it. Alcohol is killing you, so you have to make the effort. It’s two months, but you’ll be out if you behave yourself,” he concluded.
“Thanks judge. I’m trying to get into Cuan Mhuire," said Mr O'Brien.
