Kildare parents climb the Reek in memory of daughter

THE parents of a little girl who died earlier this year from a very rare condition are climbing Croagh Patrick in their daughter’s memory this Saturday, and are calling on volunteers to join in their expedition to honour what would have been her first birthday.

Louise and Phillip Halton are a couple from Naas whose infant daughter Fiadh passed away last January in the ICU in Temple Street Hospital from a rare neuro-metabolic disorder Leigh Syndrome, for which there is no cure.

Louise and Philip have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds jointly for Children's Health Foundation in Ireland and The Lily Foundation in the UK which has already more than doubled their original target of €10,000.

“Children's Health Foundation Charity supports the vital, life-saving work that takes place every minute of every day in Children's Health Ireland hospitals and urgent care centres,” said Phillip.

He explained: “The Lily Foundation is a UK Charity that works in partnership with the NHS and mitochondrial clinics pioneering medical research so that rare mitochondrial disorders, such as Leigh Syndrome, can be effectively treated and eventually cured”.

“Our baby girl, Fiadh, passed away peacefully on 26th January this year in the intensive care unit of Temple Street Hospital, one week after being diagnosed with Leigh Syndrome,” he revealed.

(Leigh Syndrome is a rare neurometabolic disorder that affects the central nervous system leading to respiratory failure).

“We are planning to hike Croagh Patrick mountain in Fiadh's memory on Saturday (24 August), starting around 10:30am, and all are most welcome to join,” he said.

The GoFundMe page is still open, and donations can be made to the Temple Street Children’s Hospital and the Lily Foundation.

“Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us in honouring the memory of our beautiful baby girl,” said Phillip.
