KILDARE Relay for Life (RfL) has broken through the seven-figure threshold, having now donated over €1,000,000 euro to the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) in its 13 years of existence.
This was achieved with a monumental effort by all involved on the Curragh Racecourse on 7-8 June when the charity teams crashed through a barrier of their own, raising an astounding €90,279 over the24-hour experience.
All this was confirmed by RfL Chair Peter Whyte, who gently corrected The Kildare Nationalist who had erroneously said in an article in June the million euro threshold was only €30,000 away when in fact, it was just below €90,000 – and they went and did that anyway.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to pass the €1m mark, it’s a big thing for us, but the 16 teams who generated the €90,000 are from all over Kildare,” he said.
“This year was the most remarkable year,” said Mr Whyte, “we had the most survivors ever!” (And here’s us thinking he was going to talk about money!) “We had 143 survivors on the day, everyone got a two-course meal, vouchers for local shops, and a goodie bag each,” he revealed.
“We had 13 volunteer hairdressers, manicurists relaxation therapists, and consultants to advise on wigs, who all catered immensely for the survivors,” he said.
“Eight thousand people attended the walk, and more than 1,000 people came especially on Saturday night for the Candle of Hope ceremony.
