A MOTORIST stopped for speeding in Kilberry, Co Kildare told gardaí he had no intention of paying a fixed charge penalty notice, despite being shown evidence of the offence.

Members of Kildare–Naas Roads Policing Unit (RPU) stopped a vehicle travelling at 80km/h in a 50km/h zone.

According to gardaí, the driver initially denied speeding. However, when shown the speed detection equipment, he changed tack, asking whether the fixed charge penalty notice could be delayed as he was “going on holidays”.

Gardaí explained that penalty notices typically take a few days to issue. The motorist then stated that he still would not be paying the fine.

Under current regulations, speeding carries a fixed charge penalty of €160 and three penalty points. Failure to pay the fine can result in a court appearance, an increased fine and five penalty points upon conviction.

Gardaí used the incident to remind motorists that attempting to avoid penalties does not make them disappear, while obeying speed limits helps keep everyone safe.

Roads policing officers reiterated that the focus remains on safer roads, reducing speeds and ensuring all road users get home safely.

“The only thing that should be delayed is your right foot,” a garda spokesperson said, urging drivers to slow down and comply with speed limits.
