Kildare students to stage walk-out protest over conditions
Curragh Community College
STUDENTS at Curragh Community College will stage a walk-out protest today, Tuesday 27 January, over ongoing concerns about poor and unsafe conditions at the school.
The walk-out protest, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday 12 January before being rescheduled, will take place at the school and will continue onto the nearby church.
The action follows significant storm damage that led to leaks from ceilings and the development of black mould, raising health and safety concerns and disrupting in-person learning. As a result, three classrooms were closed late last year, with some students temporarily moved to online learning while awaiting emergency works from the Department of Education.
The school’s parents’ association has described the building as “overcrowded, dilapidated, and unsafe”, saying students deserve facilities that are “safe and fit for purpose”.
Kildare TD’s such as Fiona O’Loughlin and Mark Wall have called for urgent progress on the long-delayed new school building at Magee Barracks, stressing that while emergency repairs are needed, the wider accommodation crisis must be addressed without further delay.
