THE plight of tenants being poorly treated by landlords in the Athy area was raised recently.

An information session held by housing charity Threshold for those renting in the private sector could be on the way after cllr Aoife Breslin brought forward a motion requesting that the council writes to the charity, “to encourage them to hold an information session to advise those renting in the private sector in Athy Municipal District of their rights.”

Cllr Breskin, speaking at a recent meeting of the Athy Municipal District outlined how her clinic tends to be taken up by her discussing rights with people renting in the Athy area. She noted the problem of landlords treating tenants poorly, referring to instances such as people being evicting by their landlord at night time.

The motion received broad support. Cllr Veralouise Behan noted the strain placed on councillors to support tenants in the area, citing a lack of other resources for those in need of information and assistance.
