Kildare's Shackleton immortalised in Lego!

The Lego version of Shackleton's ship 'The Endurance'
LEGO announced a set inspired by Kildare-born Ernest Shackleton’s famous boat ‘The Endurance’ just before Christmas, which is available in stores now.
The boat itself was a three-masted ship that sailed for The Imperial Trans-Anartctic Expedition from 1914-1917, which is considered to be the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
The Endurance’s expedition faced severe challenges when the ship became trapped in pack ice and was eventually crushed. Shackleton and his crew were left stranded there on the ice for months, before he led his men on a heroic journey to safety.

The 3,011-piece set replica model captures the majestic presence of the famous ship in all its glory, with three towering masts, 10 full sails, a flying red ensign flag and intricate rigging.
The detailed multi-level deck, connected by stairs, has removable sections for access to port and starboard cabins and the ship’s steam engine.
Other features include four detachable lifeboats, a chained bower anchor and a ship’s wheel that operates the rudder. Ideal for collectors who have a passion for historical ships, and a great decorative piece that includes a sturdy stand for display.
Kevin Kenny of Athy’s Shackleton Museum said: ”One of our members, Seamus, bought a set and is planning to make it over the Easter break.” The creation of the Lego set is a brilliant milestone for Shackleton’s story and legacy:
“The set really gives it (the story) worldwide exposure,” explained Kevin.
With the Athy museum expected to open this summer, this Lego set serves as another step forward in immortalising Shackleton and his legacy for generations to come.
