Paul Kirwin scored a dramatic late winning free as Kill staged a mighty comeback to beat Rathcoffey in Clane this evening in Round 2 of the Tom Cross Junior Championship.
Rathcoffey moved into a 1-10 to 0-7 lead in the 42nd minute but that was their last score of the game as Kill reeled them in. Kirwin scored a goal in the 57th minute to level the game at 1-10 apiece and then held his nerve to kick the winning score as the game ticked into injury time.
Elsewhere in Group A, the South Kildare derby between Grangenolvin and Castlemitchell turned out to be one sided affair. Grangenolvin emphasised their status as one of the championship favourites with a 4-16 to 1-6 win. Midfield duo Conall Bergin and Keith McGloin scored goals inside the opening ten minutes and Fionn Bergin scored their third in the 18th minute. Fionn then scored his second in the opening minutes of the second half and they controlled the remainder of the game against a side who were missing Ross Harris.
Also in Group A, Cappagh made a flying start to their game against Athgarvan with goals from Brian McNally and Jack Mullin and a third in the second half by Shane Harris rounded off a 3-6 to 0-11 win.
Both games in Group B ended with big winners. Ellistown saw Rheban by 3-20 to 1-1 and Ballykelly beat Ardclough by 2-17 to 0-4.
The first game of this year's Auld Shebeen Intermediate Football Championship was also played this evening where second half goals by James Ralph and Jamie Smyth helped St Kevins to a 2-13 to 0-8 win over last year's Junior champions Milltown.
