A man charged with money laundering and possession of heroin will have to return to court in September to be tried alongside his co-defendant.
Jordan Domican (24) with an address at Foxdene Drive, Balgaddy, Lucan appeared in Naas District Court from custody, where he is serving a sentence for an unspecified crime.
Sergeant Dave Hanrahan told how colleagues raided an address in Ardrew Woods, Athy on 4 November last on foot of a search warrant, where they discovered a total of €2,000 worth of heroin on a table and “on persons there”.
“The defendant was also found to have €1,500 in cash on him, and no explanation to have this,” said Sgt Hanrahan.
Three people – the homeowner, Domican and co-defendant were arrested – but only the latter two were charged.
Domican is charged with possession and possession with intent to supply the heroin, and also under of the Money Laundering and Terrorism Act.
“Okay, I’ll accept jurisdiction,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan when notified that the DPP had ruled these charges as 'summary', that is, to be tried in the lower district court, rather than the circuit court.
Noting Mr Domican’s plea of not guilty, the judge remanded him on continuing bail on these matters until 16 September, when co-defendant Ryan Spellman is due to appear, when the case will be argued.
“Will you be released (from present sentence) on that date?” asked the judge.
“I don’t think so,” said the man in the dock.
“Okay, State to produce,” said the judge, meaning that because the case is being heard, the gardaí will have to physically bring the prisoner down to Naas for the day, rather than use a video link, which is only allowed for procedural matters.
