The death of John Maher has caused deep shock and grief

A MAN has been arrested following the death of a Kildare father-of-two in a workplace tragedy.

John Maher, originally from Portlaoise but who had been settled in Rathangan, lost his life while working on a construction site in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow last Wednesday.

Tarieli Schatz of Abbey Street, Wicklow Town was arrested in Wicklow following the incident and was brought to a garda station for interview. He was subsequently charged and was brought before Bray District Court on Friday.

Mr Schatz is charged with driving a Thwaites front dumper ‘without due care and attention, thereby causing the death of another person, namely John Maher’ on the public road at Greenane Road, Ballygannon, Rathdrum on 2 July.

The accused man was remanded in custody to appear in court again this Tuesday, 8 July.

A devoted dad of two young sons, Mr Maher was laid to rest today. Aged in his 40s, he lived with his wife Tracey (née Power) and their sons Seán and Fionn at Kilmoney North, Rathangan, Co Kildare and was formerly from Rathevan, Portlaoise, where he has close relatives.

In his death notice, his heartbroken family said: ‘It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of John Maher, after a tragic workplace accident on 2 July.

‘John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Tracey, sons Seán and Fionn, parents Pat and Mary, brother Liam, sisters Patricia and Eileen, parents in law Theo and Josie, brothers in law Tommy, David, John and Ciarán, sisters in law Dawn, Natasha and Laura, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, extended family, neighbours, friends and work colleagues.

‘Predeceased by his uncles, James and Seán Maher. May John rest in peace.’ 

John’s remains reposed at his family home in Kilmoney, Rathangan on Sunday, Requiem Mass at noon on Monday in The Church of Assumption and St Patrick, Rathangan was followed by burial in St Patrick's Cemetery, Rathangan.
