Man with two knives was about to fight

Carlow Courthouse
JUDGE Geraldine Carthy last week refused jurisdiction in a case involving a man wielding two knives who was about to fight another man who had a slash hook because she deemed it too serious to be dealt with at district court level. William Delaney, 13 Phelim Crescent, Station Road, Tullow was charged with possessing knives and using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour at New Oak Estate, Carlow on 15 August 2024 but he wasn’t in court when his case was called.
Inspector David Shore told the court that gardaí were called out to New Oak Estate, where they witnessed Mr Delaney (40) running towards a second defendant, Brendan Keating (31), who lived in the estate, wielding two knives. Inspector Shore continued that Mr Keating had a slash hook with a three-foot blade and was subsequently charged with illegally possessing an article and engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour arising from the same incident.
In a previous court sitting in December last year, Judge John O’Leary had refused jurisdiction over Mr Keating’s case and a book of evidence is being prepared for Mr Keating to be sent forward to Carlow Circuit Court.
Last week, Judge Carthy said that it was appropriate for her to refuse jurisdiction over Mr Delaney’s case, too, and adjourned the case until 22 January, when books of evidence will be served on both Mr Delaney and Mr Keating.
