Gardaí do not suspect foul play in relation to the man’s death and believe he took his own life.
A man’s body has been discovered in a reservoir after a woman was found seriously injured in a house in Co Kildare.
Gardaí attended an incident at a house in Oaklawn West in Leixlip, where a fire was extinguished.
A woman aged in her 50s was treated at the scene by emergency services before being taken to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, for treatment of serious injuries, gardaí said.
The scene was preserved pending a technical examination.
On Monday morning, shortly after 6am, the Garda water unit recovered the body of a man aged in his 50s from the Leixlip reservoir.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to either incident to contact them.
Any persons who were in the areas of Oaklawn West, Leixlip, the N4 and the Leixlip reservoir between 5:30am and 8am and who may have video footage (including dash-cam) are asked to share it with gardaí.
The Irish Times reported that the man attacked the woman, who was his ex-partner, before setting her house on fire and taking his own life.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the series of events, but say they are not searching for any other suspects. The woman remains in hospital with serious injuries.
The man, who is aged in his 50s, had previously been in a relationship with the woman, who was also aged in her 50s.
Gardaí believe he travelled to her home Oaklawn West, Leixlip on Monday morning and that she was the victim of a serious assault. The woman managed to escape the house with significant injuries.
The man remained at the scene and is believed to have set the property on fire.
He subsequently left the home and his body was recovered from the nearby Leixlip Reservoir by the Garda Water Unit. Gardaí do not suspect foul play in relation to the man’s death and believe he took his own life.
