A woman who allegedly caused “catastrophic, life-changing injuries” to a motorcyclist is to face a circuit court trial, but won’t learn when until May. Inna Perederii (44), of Rheban Manor, Athy was appearing in the district court facing a single charge of dangerous driving causing serious injury. The court heard how Ms Perederii had been driving on the Carlow Road at 6.30am on 15 February and in an attempt to turn right “collided with a motorcycle”.
Sergeant Dave Hanrahan listed some of the injuries, which included breaking two spinal vertebrae, a leg, collar bone and some internal injuries. “Catastrophic, life-changing injuries. How can the DPP call this a minor offence?” Judge Desmond Zaidan asked rhetorically.
“She pulled across oncoming traffic and it’s for summary disposal (tried in a district court)? Shocking! This is what I call an insult to the injured party,” he added.
“The court accepts that accidents can happen, but not in this case. I’m going to refuse jurisdiction,” he said, and adjourned the case until 13 May for a book of evidence and a trial date.
