"It is the job of a motorist to know the right of way at a roundabout. Putting more signs on one makes it busier and harder to travel through."

That was a comment from officials at the recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, in a discussion on a motion seeking ways to make a roundabout at the back entrance to Newbridge College more safe, including “to make clear to motorists” about the right of way on the junction.

The issue had been raised by cllr Noel Heavey, who said it was a “very busy little junction” with traffic coming from all directions and through which people drive on their way to church services in the college.

Cllr Tom McDonnell supported the motion, saying the junction is a “hot” point and a problem, with “continued near misses” happening, especially coming up from the Sarsfields side.

"It is very blind, very dangerous," he said.

Also supporting the motion, cllr Chris Pender questioned whether the junction should be a roundabout at all?

"Maybe a T junction would be more suitable, and conducive to providing for the needs of pedestrians. Re-assessing the junction completely would be the best response."

The municipal district office has agreed to carry out a technical assessment of the roundabout, but all work will be subject to budget and availability. Cllr Heavey accepted the report, saying he hopes it translates into action.
