IN LINE with speed limit changes which already took effect on rural roads in February of this year, changes are expected to go live for Kildare residential housing estates in 2026.

The public consultation process has closed in respect of the upcoming change in speed limit to 30kmph in residential housing estates.

According to Senior Executive Officer, Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces, Mark McLoughlin, of 11 submissions made during the process, only one was negative.

The council plans to implement this new speed limit on April 1, 2026, but this date is not yet permanently fixed, with the permanent date to be finalised in December.

The reason behind this change is to “improve driver behaviour,” and will be followed by a change in speed limit on national secondary roads from 100kmph to 80kmph.

Naas Mayor, Seamie Moore, asked if this change would be accompanied with “some form of notices” for motorists, to alert them ahead of time.

Mr McLoughlin agreed that this was a “valid point” and committed to “looking at a campaign to promote it.”
