No extra measures for notorious Kildare road

The view down Kilcullen hill
DESPITE a colleague describing the speed of traffic at the bottom of the hill in Kilcullen as “abhorrent”, a councillor’s pleas for some action fell on deaf official ears this week.
Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer had brought a motion to the September meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District asking that the council “carries out a comprehensive traffic audit in the town of Kilcullen and the approach roads”.
She asked that this might include a study traffic volume, vehicle movement, peak times, pinch points, speed, type of vehicles.
She was supported in this by her namesake, senior sister, and chair of the meeting, cllr Peggy O’Dwyer.
"I was in Kilcullen yesterday, and ‘Wow!’ The speed of the lorries coming down that hill…” was her given gasp of description.
She was joined by Cllr Chris Pender. “I agree with Tracey,” he said. “The speed in Kilcullen is abhorrent, and there is a serious need for a traffic study in this town."
However, when Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer saw the formal report she could not hide her disappointment.
“Kildare County Council do not currently have the capacity to carry out a comprehensive traffic audit for Kilcullen,” said Daragh Conlan, acting senior engineer with the capital projects team.
