Pedestrian-friendly crossing to be installed along Kildare canal

The crossing by the canal in Sallins
PLANS to convert a vehicular ramp along the canal in Sallins into a pedestrian friendly one are expected to begin in November, according to a council spokesperson, but that will be dependent on exploratory works and re-ducting of services.
This was revealed at a recent meeting of the Naas Municipal District following a question from cllr Bill Clear.
“Can the council update members on the proposed timelines and current status regarding the removal of the ramp located on the north side of the canal in Sallins?” he asked.
“Local residents are seeking clarity on when works will commence to remove it, and any update on any design would be appreciated, along with an expected timeframe for completion."
His question was fielded by Darragh Carey, the Acting Senior Executive Engineer at Strategic Projects and Public Realm (SPPR).
“The SPPR team are progressing this phase of the Grand Canal Greenway Phase 2, and a large element of the design is complete along with draft tender documents,” he began.
“However, confirmation of underground services is required.
“A ground investigations contractor has been appointed and will complete slit trench works on site in the coming weeks.
“On receipt of the ground investigation results, the information will be added to the design drawings for completion of the tender package.
“Other communications are taking place with utility providers for proposed relocation and diversion of existing services on this project and will need to be finalised prior to completion of the tender package.
“Utility service relocation and diversions are high-risk items to the project timeline and project cost, due to the service providers’ issues with resourcing and programming,” he warned. “These issues are causing considerable additional workload and programme delays on other projects currently in the construction phase,” he continued.
“Following the tender period award by end of July, and appointment of the contractor, we would intend to have a contractor commence the works in Mid Q4 2025."
