KILDARE County Council is now looking a reducing the size of bin openings along the Blueway between Naas and Sallins in an effort to limit their continued misuse.

This came to light at this month’s meeting of the Naas Municipal District following a question from cllr Carmel Kelly seeking to address the issue.

“Could the council look to increase the bin collections along the Grand Canal in Sallins for the summer months of June, July and August?” she enquired.

“Naas Municipal District office has been monitoring the street bins in question, and it has come to our attention that bins along the canal are being misused for the disposal of domestic waste,” concurred Mark McLoughlin, senior executive officer, Transport Section in his formal reply.

“(Also) large items such as pizza boxes and domestic waste bags are contributing to the appearance of the bin being full and, in some cases, blocking the chute,” he revealed.

“To address this issue, the Naas Municipal District office is liaising with Sallins Tidy Town team currently in developing a plan to reduce the size of the bin openings.

“This modification aims to discourage the disposal of oversized domestic waste while allowing for appropriate use by the public.

“In the interim, Naas Municipal District office will continue to monitor and keep the members updated as this solution progresses."
