Efforts to improve safety for students travelling to school in Monasterevin are moving forward, with the local council working through the early planning stages of the Safe Routes to School programme.
The update was provided following a question from cllr Pat Balfe at a recent Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting.
Kildare County Council confirmed the scheme is currently at the Option Selection Stage. Draft drawings have been received, and discussions are underway with the appointed consultant to prepare a submission to the National Transport Authority (NTA) for progression to the Preliminary Design Stage.
A public consultation process will follow once the project reaches that stage, allowing residents and stakeholders to provide feedback.
Despite the progress, the council noted that timelines remain uncertain.
“As the timescales depend on NTA approval, it is not possible to give an accurate date at present,” said the senior engineer for sustainable transport and traffic management.
The programme is aimed at creating safer, more accessible routes for students walking and cycling to school, reducing traffic congestion and promoting active travel.
