PLANS are advancing for the redevelopment of several council-owned cottages on Canalside, Athy, following confirmation at the Athy Municipal District Meeting.

In response to a query from cllr Mark Leigh regarding the future of the cottages, the council confirmed that a feasibility proposal has been submitted by the Architectural Services team to the Planning Section. The proposal recommends the demolition of terraced units 3 to 8 Canalside, with the intention of replacing them with five modern residential units.

The planned development will feature a two-storey terrace consisting of three two-bedroom dwellings and two one-bedroom apartments. Notably, one of the apartments will be a fully universal design unit, suitable for individuals with a wide range of mobility needs.

According to the council report, the redevelopment aims to provide age-friendly and smaller family housing in the heart of Athy town. A recent structural survey supported the removal of the existing units due to their condition.

In addition, a Conservation Architect was engaged to carry out an Architectural Heritage Impact Assessment, which concluded that the proposed two-storey terrace would be “extremely welcome.” Architectural Services plan to submit a Part 8 planning application in the fourth quarter of 2025, pending a favourable response from the Planning Section. Construction is expected to commence in 2026.
