Proposals to tackle overgrowing weeds in Kildare lake being examined

KILDARE County Council is examining potential solutions to tackle weed overgrowth in Naas lakes.
The issue was discussed at September’s meeting of Naas Municipal District, where concerns were also raised about rats being seen near the Lakelands area.
Cllr Anne Breen brought forward a question on the meeting agenda asking for the council to provide an update ‘on any action taken to rectify the weed proliferation overgrowing the lakes in Naas’.
Acting senior parks and landscaping officer Simon Wallace issued the council’s written response, reporting that ‘the Parks Department is currently working with Naas Biodiversity Group to seek a solution to the siltation and nutrient enrichment of the water which is part of trying to rectify the weed proliferation’.
Speaking at the meeting, cllr Breen said that the presence of rats “in different areas of the lake” is causing concern for residents.
An official from the council said that a topographical survey has been carried out at the upper part of the lake, along with another measure carried out.
A consultant ecologist has looked at the results. One of the solutions proposed by the ecologist is being looked at by the council, along with Inland Fisheries Ireland and Naas Biodiversity Group.
The official indicated that funding challenges will arise in implementing a solution, but said the council is trying to progress the situation.
