Thompson's Cross

A DESIGN to improve the safety of Thompson’s Cross junction outside Kilcullen is expected to be finalised in the first quarter of 2026.

The junction has been a source of concern for years, with a lack of resources at Kildare County Council (KCC) previously delaying the project.

At the most recent meeting of Kildare Newbridge Municipal District on 17 December, Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer asked Kildare County Council to confirm that a design and plan to address the ongoing issues at the junction has been finalised.

A report issued by Mark McLoughlin, senior executive officer of transport, mobility and open spaces at KCC, in response to Cllr O’Dwyer, stated that the design is currently being developed and is expected to be finalised in the first quarter of the new year.

Back in April, Cllr O’Dwyer had questioned the recommendations made by consultants as solutions to the issue.

The junction, which has been a topic of conversation and subject to criticism for several years, tends to have a high volume of traffic coming from the south towards Newbridge.
