KILDARE Co Council has no plans at the moment for traffic calming along a route on the outskirts of Athy.
Local councillor Veralouise Behan wants such measures between the roundabout past the Circle K through to the old Model School and the cemetery. At July’s meeting of
, she spoke of an increase in speed following the reduction in traffic (after the opening of the new ring road).Cllr Behan noted that there are lights at the entrance to the GAA, but there is a good distance for vehicles to pick up speed again. She explained that she was in France recently and said it was difficult to pick up speed in urban areas because of different measures that were obstacles to speed.
Cllr Aoife Breslin, meanwhile, looked for traffic calming measures just around the corner, on the main road in Rheban Manor. No concrete undertaking was given – a report explained that the MD office will review it and, based on the results of said review, will decide how best to progress.
Cllr Breslin said this has been on her agenda for a number of years. She said cars are doing “some amount of speed” and planting has been driven into.
